These Melodies - Mixmasters: Addictive TV

This 10 minute piece was created for Addictive TV for broadcast on ITV and later for release on Moonshine records DVD label in the US. I composed the music and the video was created by Brian Kane, a long-time collaborator. Brian Kane was one of the founding members of the innovative video art group Emergency Broadcast Network (EBN), who were early pioneers of video sampling and VJ software in the late 80's and who gained popular acclaim after their involvement with U2's ZooTV Tour in 1992. Brian still develops innovative visuals software and writes articles for Mondo2000, Wired and Electronic Musician.

Telepainting @ FISEA 93: Minneapolis, MN

ArtLab was selected to present the "Telepainting" portion of the Virtual Classroom project at the 4th International Symposium on Electronic Art in Minneapolis, in 1993. I was able to meet and see the work of some of the early movers and shakers in the field such as Brenda Laurel, Rich Gold, Simon Penny, Char Davies, David Blair, Eduardo Kac, and others. I learned a great deal and was compelled to explore my own work from a different perspective.

HyperTexture CD-ROM Magazine - Boulder, CO; Director

HyperTexture was the outgrowth of the Boulder, CO based arts publication "Texture Magazine". A volunteer-driven effort, this unique publication proposed an offering of over 30 minutes of audio material (music, performance, audio art) playable on any standard compact disc player. The audio submissions ranged from Croatian women's poetry, to music by Jello Biafra, to Japanese techno dance music. Of more interest to the hypertext artist were the remaining 350MB of information. This was to consist of feature articles, computer art, still images, animations and digital videos. The magazine has a strong emphasis on artists' resource materials, including information on grant applications and deadlines, and mailing lists of arts organizations and spaces. The project was supported by grants from the City of Boulder and industry leaders such as Maxtor, Syquest, and Macromedia. Although the CD-ROM never found a publisher, the project was successful in exposing artists and arts administrators to the potentials of computer-based multimedia publishing.
A Virtual Classroom

In 1992-1993, working with school-aged kids, I co-produced an acclaimed “Virtual Classroom” which investigated the creative and educational possibilities of emerging technologies, including networked collaborative digital painting, a virtual puppet theater, thought-driven MIDI music, and on-line communities. The event was funded in part from grants from the Boulder Arts Commission, the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District and with in-kind support from Eight Days A Week Media Center, and GW Hannaway and Associates. The one-day event was presented at the Boulder Public Library auditorium.

RadioValve Internet Radio Station - Boulder, CO: Co-founder; Station Manager

RadioValve is a 24x7 non-stop techno music webcasting "radio station". One of the first generation of webcasters, the station offered 23 unique programs ranging from Global DJ Mix Sets to informational music magazine features. In addition to RadioValves daily schedule, the site also provided on-demand interviews. I was a founder of the company, and served as Station Manager. The company developed its own station management software, which still runs as a historical and educational resource for the independent music community.
8 Days a Week Media Copy Center - Boulder, CO; Graphics Specialist

Eight Days a Week owners, Sam and Cheryl Sussman, put up with me for years. They also supported many of the early ArtLab projects, with generous donations of services. From the first color copier in Boulder in 1977 to today's most state-of-the-art equipment the Sussmans have kept Eight Days A Week on the cutting edge of technology in a friendly hometown atmosphere. During my time at 8 Days, I was responsible for providing high quality color copies, and for experimenting with connecting things that maybe shouldn't oughta have been connected.
